Administration of Police Training In the United States, there are several ways for a person interested in becoming a police officer to obtain the basic training required. The large majority of policing agencies are municipal; that is, they have jurisdiction over a specific city, town, or village. The sheriff’s office generally has jurisdiction over a county, and such agencies as state police and state highway patrols have statewide jurisdiction. Most federal law enforcement agencies, with the exception of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have special functions to perform.

Patterson is also the author of Understanding the Electronic Monitoring of Offenders (VDM Verlag, 2009) and Policing and Criminology, with Ed Pollock (Sage, 2011). Pamela Patrick is a psychologist with Australia’s Ministry of Home Affairs. She graduated from the University of Queensland, St Lucia, Australia, with a honors degree. Her work involves research on human trafficking, specifically qualitative research to understand the victimology of sex trafficked individuals.
