On those campuses, she met her two scholar mentors, economist Grace S. M. Zorbaugh and psychologist Kate Hevner Mueller, both active in the National Association of Deans of Women (NADW) and with the AWS governments on their campuses in the 1930s and 1940s. Both women adhered to the professional conventions originally established by midwestern and western deans, drawing from the tradition of Progressivism. Other deans also promoted principles of women’s equality through their offices during the hyper-domesticity of the 1950s and early 1960s.
Not all deans of women abandoned the feminist roots of the profession, though. Taylor adhered to the feminist roots of the early deans, as did the deans of women at Purdue, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alabama, Oklahoma, Syracuse, and Pennsylvania. The feminism of early deans created a radical foundation in the student affairs profession that still exists today—one that supported each student reaching her full citizenship in the society. This basis for the premise of social justice, still visible in student affairs offices today, arose not from the disciplinary function, but from the early women deans’ insistence on student government and self-governance to build young women’s leadership, decision-making, and citizenship skills.
