Analysis follows the path of the free associa tions—affected by the interventions of the analyst, but necessarily also affecting the analyst who makes them. Like any assumption of authority by the analyst, introduction of his own tempos tends to impose an interference with the method that may obscure the road w e seek to travel. Nothing I have said is intended to convey the impression that I see the analyst as a silent partner. Silence or speaking on the part of the analyst serve to foster free association.
The patient recognized readily that I was right in my views of his imprudence, which I based explicitly on his usual practices and standards, not on some independent judgement of my own about the quality of the investments or the future of the stock market. Nonetheless, although he gained considerable understanding of his motives, thoughts, and feelings in this dangerous action, it took several weeks before he could act on my warnings. True, the analyst makes the decision, for himself, whether to enter the partnership, and, within limits, he is entitled to compen sation and to set a schedule. Once the decision has been made, however, the analyst's actions are determined by the patient's needs, principally by the patient's free associations. When it comes to timing, however, a different sort of answer is called for.
