Until 1952, it was believed that the oldest written record in Greek was an alphabetic inscription on an Attic jug, dated to c. 725 BC. In that year, however, Michael Ventris, a gifted young British architect and archaeologist (1922-56), killed at the age of thirty-four in a car accident, deciphered the so-called 'Linear B' script and proved conclusively that this much older language of the Creto-Minoan period - however inadequately recorded in this unsatisfactory script - was definitely Greek.
