In conceptual terms, idealism and realism provided the competing "grand theories" around which philosophical IR debates revolved; Marxism-leninism was a lesser part of the mix. Iblitical idealism emerged as the central paradigm in the aftermath of World War I but was increasingly challenged by political realism with the unsettling events of the 1330s.
