This structure, they said, perpetuated a form of colonialism based on economic underdevelopment and unfair terms of trade.
In conceptual terms, idealism and realism provided the competing "grand theories" around which philosophical IR debates revolved; Marxism-leninism was a lesser part of the mix. Iblitical idealism emerged as the central paradigm in the aftermath of World War I but was increasingly challenged by political realism with the unsettling events of the 1330s. In a dramatic extension of the prewar legal-instit~tionai~reformist movement, post-World War I idealists further absorbed much of liberalism and reacted against the long-standing dominance of realist practice in interstate relations.
