Being media literate means understanding the messages being transmitted by mass media and how those messages affect our culture and its members. One of the basic tenets of media literacy is that literate members of a society are more powerful and more liberated. I also like the perspective of Dorothy and Jerome Singer, that being media literate can also be thought of as being a critical viewer.

These studies illustrate how we can be completely unaware of the factors that influence us. They also illustrate how we can be convinced of our motives even when our explanations are patently false. We don’t always know why we do what we do, but we are perfectly happy to make up reasons that sound good and to believe them as if they were the gospel truth.
