An alternative viewpoint is that nonstandard analysis extends the real number line by introducing both infinitely small and infinitely large numbers, much in the same way that the reals can be constructed from the rationals. These two viewpoints can be reconciled. For clarity, we refer to the traditional reals as “the reals” and the extended reals as “the hyperreals”. In the first viewpoint, the set R corresponds to the hyperreals, and the reals are the elements of R that happen to be standard.
