Hague also recalled Christie’s excellent memory; a point worth the reader recalling later in this book. Dr John Matheson later reported, ‘He says he was offered promotion three times but refused because he did not want to leave his pals’. This is not impossible–as the war progressed, the army offered the chance of commissions to educated and intelligent men and Christie certainly fitted the bill. Allegedly he won shooting competitions, but we have no evidence for any of this but his own word.

In 1924 she was employed by the English Electric Company, Phoenix Works, off Thornton Road in central Bradford. She never spoke about her husband whilst she was there. Emily Willis, a fellow employee, recalled ‘She spoke of her sister and her sister’s child. She was always talking about the child to whom she appeared deeply attached’. She was made redundant in about 1928. Then she moved to Sheffield to live with her brother, Henry Simpson Waddington (he had adopted the latter name in 1938–some writers have mistaken it for Ethel’s maiden name), a clerk employed by the council, resident at 63 Hinde House Lane.
