Then, as now, officers were often called upon to defend their use of deadly force in the courts. All of these men have had their detractors and still do. The lawmen included here all have records and reputations that I believe justify their inclusion in the group. If I had to pick a bunch from that period of history to side me in a fight, I don't think I could do any better for skill at arms, devotion to duty, or personal integrity. We do not have to go without heroes. We do not have to choose between Wyatt Earp and Roy Rogers, knowing that neither of them is quite the real thing.

They broke out of prison, but before they could carry out their threats, vigilance committees, cheated out of their earlier opportunity to show how they felt about the thieves, lynched them both.
