We now look at a parallel source of positive perceptions of the change process. Listening to children We are very interested in the reasons children give for improvement and change. This is an area we would recommend for schools to research themselves, for there is a great deal to be discovered. We have found useful guidance from listening to actual comments made by children and young people.
As psychologists we recognise these levels but increasingly find that schools new to us are often able to take on change effectively and without fuss. Their needs are for practical starting methods and for follow-up and support to sustain and develop the innovations. They also often need strategies to identify and deal with their own negative feelings: we deal with issues of resistance to change in chapter 10. The time allocation curve and the view of change as a process of variable momentum, beginning slowly, takes account of these issues, giving a cautious start to an important process which can be sustained.
