In each of the cases we seem to be forced to reject a premise that initially was thought to be well supported either by intuition, by empirical evidence, or by broader metaphysical assumptions. Another way to put the matter is to point out that, on the basis of the canonical formulation of the problem, four T HE PROBLEM OF MENTAL CAUSATION 31 arguments can be constructed each of which yields a consistent philosophical position. And in fact, most of the candidate solutions to the problem of mental causation can be characterized as subscribing to either one out of these four arguments.
The first time that the concept in its philosophical use was explicitly mentioned and called “supervenience” was in Richard Hare’s writings (cf. Hare (1984), p. 3). Hare had applied the term to Moore’s philosophy, although he claimed not to have coined the term himself. As he pointed out later, the term was already in use in Oxford around the 1940’s, but Hare did not remember the context or by whom it was first used. Despite this earlier presence of the term in philosophical discussion, it was not until Davidson used the term “supervenience” in the context of developing his theory of anomalous monism that the term entered the center of the debate on mental causation.
