Although Haldane’s hypothesis had a major effect on our thinking about the origins of human disease, there was little evidence that he thought much about haemoglobin disorders either before or after the meeting in Stockholm at which he proposed his hypothesis. How did this all come about? Undoubtedly Haldane, like all population geneticists at the time, was interested in mutation rates.
