In this PSG project, we often confronted preconceptions held by us as university and school faculty. Changing school-university cultures into genuinely collaborative research communities will require a fundamental shift in how teachers and professors relate to, and learn from, one another.

Notably, a women’s studies class described its own development as a process of comentoring which “gives a name to supportive assistance provided by several connected individuals. Placing the prefix ‘co’ before ‘mentoring’ reconstructs the relationship as nonhierarchical; ‘co’ makes mentoring reciprocal and mutual” (Bona, Rinehart and Volbrecht, 1995, p. 119). , p. 119). In other words, comentoring also values diversity in such areas as ethnicity, gender, status, age, ability, skill, learning style, and subject-matter discipline.

Those who joined the group became more and more open, empowering themselves to decide what “counted” as a worth-while perspective to share about mentoring theory and practice.
