We are alert now, Snowflake and I. We see that the road plunges south down a hill from this place of encounter. Roadworkers hauling plastic bags, all of them Chicano and Indian, trudge along the thoroughfare picking up discarded beer cans and dirty diapers. A tiny dot of a vehicle whizzes by them, mounts the hill with no hint of effort, and growing larger by the second, rushes toward us. The car is a late-model Lexus. As it passes, I catch sight of the license plate: OHIO. “I hate roads,” murmurs Snowflake.

The land is slicked with petroleum tar. Modern-day settlers embark, carrying their worldly possessions strapped to the rumble seat. More bushes and trees than you can count are flattened dead. White-tailed deer, turkey, and mountain lion flee for their lives. The diversity of the plant world is lost as weeds colonize the highway’s edge. Fisheries are clogged with oil from crankcases and oil-change stations. Walking paths disappear. Horses are outlawed. Landslides proliferate. Armed patrol cars multiply.

S. holds up his favorite term paper: a neatly ballpoint-penned report on the subject at hand — blown to illegible shreds by a huge, messy bullet hole. England’s territory alone covers a full quarter of the globe: from Ireland, across The Map Africa and the Middle East, including parts of China, New Zealand, Australia, Ceylon, islands in the Caribbean, and the Indian subcontinent in its entirety — all frosted by the obligatory pink of the royal dominion.
