Example text

The role of the theorist-critic here is revealing, for although the theory that supposedly informs the reading dictates that all texts be seen as metaphorical, indeterminate, and so on, it is in fact left to the charismatic discretion of the critic to determine, as if by fiat, which texts comply to the theory's characterisation of 'textuality', and which somehow elude that condition. Certainly the acts of exclusion and inclusion practised in 'Sex and History' are nowhere theorised or justified, and the result is a critical practice which seems remarkably, and indeed provocatively, arbitrary in its characterisation and interpretation of particular texts.

Thus, Spivak wants to discern politically expedient ideological falsehoods where there can allegedly be no truth; she wants to help reconstruct the history of female literary marginalisation whilst denying the possibility of authentic histories; she wants to assert the claims of emancipation whilst at the same time repudiating ethics and postulating only the most minimal conception of individual agency imaginable; she wants to employ psychoanalytic concepts without conceding, at least in principle, a real history of her analysee; and so on.

III We have argued that Spivak's reading of The Prelude is defective in a number of important respects, and that these defects flow from deficiencies inherent in her deconstructive mode of criticism. Let 38 Richard Freadman and Seumas Miller us now consider further some of our fundamental disagreements with Spivak. One disagreement concerns the concept of culture. Spivak's Marxism predisposes her to view culture as an ideologically expedient construction by the ascendant classes (and the ascendant gender).
