Here, the problem is not so much that critical researchers do not recognize the need to ensure that the right conditions for dialogue are present in their own practice; a significant place is allocated to reflection, but critical theorists are not required to be reflexive, they are not required to submit their own position to critical scrutiny and examine the nature and effects of the power Critical Approaches to Research relations, operating ‘behind their backs’ but still nonetheless present in their emancipatory projects.

Thus, actual situations can be examined (an important task of research) to ascertain the degree to which they deviate from an ideal speech situation, and appropriate action can be taken to bring them closer to the ideal.
