Following two centuries of decline prior to 1930, and on account of acquiring important rights of occupation in inland reserves where they have their own education and development programmes, the Amerindian numbers in Guyana have since increased four-fold to 35–40,000 or about five per cent of the population. Of the other five peoples of Guyana, nearly sixty per cent of the population is East Indian, and one-third is of African descent. Chinese account for two per cent of the population, while those of European provenance (Portugese, British) now number much less than one per cent.
