By National Research Council, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences, Board on Army Science and Technology, Technology, and Experimentation Committee on Strategies for Network Science

The U.S. army has devoted to a technique of network-centric conflict. for this reason, the military has develop into more and more attracted to the severe position of community technological know-how. To an important quantity, this curiosity used to be influenced by way of an previous NRC record, community technology. to construct on that ebook, the military requested the NRC to behavior a learn to outline complex working versions and architectures for destiny military laboratories and facilities excited about community technology, applied sciences, and experimentation (NSTE). The demanding situations due to base realignment and closure (BRAC) relocations of military learn, improvement, and engineering resources--as they affected the NSTE program--were additionally to be a spotlight of the examine. This publication presents a dialogue of what NSTE is required by means of the military; an exam of the NSTE at present performed via the military; an evaluate of wanted infrastructure assets for military NSTE; and an research of pursuits, types, and choices for an NSTE heart.

28 NSTE ACROSS THE ARMY TODAY 29 Currently, NSTE efforts conducted by the Army are primarily in the area of information and communications. Much less work is ongoing in human performance in networks and other priority network areas described in Chapter 2. Figure 3-1 depicts the principal Army organizations currently engaged in NSTE, and Table 3-1 summarizes the present physical locations for ongoing work in each of the priority network areas. Specific organizations and their work are discussed below.

Network-centric operations involve people, processes, and information technologies working together to enable timely and trusted access to and sharing of information, as well as collaboration among those who need it. The Global Information Grid (GIG) is the foundation for enabling essential social and human networks that lead to effective and timely decisions. Army NSTE must be capable of supporting development of these emerging complex social/human models. In addition, there is a need to conduct experiments that can improve the understanding of the usability of these new decision-making networks in a manner that will translate into new capabilities.
