The leaves fall on the ground and the rice stays on the flat basket. The rice is stored in a big bamboo storage bin. When the family needs rice to cook for food, they get rice from the bamboo bin. The women put the rice seeds in a big round wooden barrel. The barrel has a long pole on one side. The women step on one end and make it move like a hammer.

Page 24 Recipes One pleasant summer afternoon I observed the herb and spice collection from the garden and watched the preparation of three traditional Hmong meals by my co-writer, Dia, and her husband, Kao Xiong. Then came the tasty part, when we sampled these foods. Dia and Kao cooked like my mother-in-law dida handful of this, a pinch of that, a dash of this, and approximated amounts of water.
