Properly sized buttonholes are long enough for their buttons to slip through easily and short enough to prevent the buttons from coming undone accidentally. Generally, buttonholes are 1/4-inch longer than the width of the buttons. The buttonholes used on military garments are keyhole buttonholes. They have eyes to keep the buttonholes from becoming distorted by button shanks.
