At the scientific method end of the spectrum, validity is confirmed through positivistic processes such as replication or the medical ‘double blind’ and at the other end it is confirmed by the invocation of more relativistic notions such as the ‘shock of recognition’ or ‘thick description’ or ‘triangulation’. In the former, the expectation is that anyone coming after and reading what the researcher did, could repeat the research and achieve the same results. Or that succeeding researchers could try other approaches to disprove the research by developing new instruments.
These ‘moles’ can be particularly effective, in the action research paradigm. Action research takes many forms. At its heart is the rubric that the practitioner is best placed to research his or her own practice as a means to understanding and improving that practice. I have written elsewhere and often enough, how action research can become dominated by the imperialistic interests of academia, most recently (Sanger, 1995c). Ideally, action research is conducted by practitioners without the help of external facilitators.
Possibly a state of passive engagement, where images, sounds and smells are allowed to deluge the brain and a kind of inductive interpretation takes place. Yet, at the heart of psychopathology lies a fundamental confusion between the self as object and the self of pure subjectivity. Emotions, thoughts, impulses, images and sensations are the contents of our consciousness: we witness them; we are aware of their existence. Likewise, the body, the self-image, and the self-concept are all constructs that we observe.
