Clever liars could simply describe what they really were doing on a different evening, thereby drawing from as accessible a set of facts and memories as those of any truth-teller. Also, to the extent that suspects can anticipate some of the questions they may be asked, they can prepare their answers in advance. The issue then becomes whether the liars know how to communicate their planned answers in a way that sounds both sincere and spontaneous. There is another important psychological difference between liars and truth-tellers that could result in the two creating different impressions.

People lying about transgressions look more nervous than do truth-tellers. They also blink more and speak more quickly. In addition, they are more inhibited than truth-tellers: they move their feet and legs less often. Do liars give themselves away by saying too much? In some of the studies we reviewed, liars and truth-tellers spoke very briefly – sometimes all they said was just one word. In other studies, liars and truth-tellers talked 30 Bella M.
