7 The antebellum Gorgas household reflected a comfortable, but not lavish, lifestyle. That world contrasted sharply with the family's gradual descent into genteel poverty after the Civil War, a result of Josiah's careers as a manager of a failing ironworks and as a harassed teacher in a school verging on bankruptcy. The harsh eyes of the world judged Josiah to be a success as a soldier and a failure as a civilian. Like so many other southern families fallen on hard times, all the Gorgases had left after 1865 was pride in the family's past.

12 He was appalled that suffrage was extended to blacks, that blacks and whites sat together in the Alabama constitutional convention, that the legislature listened to prayers by a black chaplain. A broad streak of fatalism runs throughout the journals. Josiah viewed the war in its early stages as an event where God was on the side of the Confederacy. As the Confederacy's fortunes waned, he wondered if God had abandoned the South, and at the surrender he accepted the outcome as the judgment of God.

In an effort to conserve writing space in these smaller volumes he left a slight gap between sentences where he began a new subject. The editor has treated these breaks as she believes Josiah intended them, as opening a new paragraph.
