Arthur Miller says it well, “in China, if you try to nail things down, you are hammering on the surface of the ocean. ”57 This is especially true as I try to write the history of the Fu Ren University. There are many issues need to be discussed 44 THE RISE AND FALL OF FU REN UNIVERSITY, BEIJING objectively. In an effort to nail things down so that a rather complete and authentic history of the university will be done, I will first to take a step to explore the establishment process of the university, which was from 1912 to 1925 in the following chapter.

This university received generous support from the government of France which made the university prosper. 19 In 1932, the university was finally registered with the Ministry of Education. Another School of Dentistry was added in 1933. This university eventually developed into a very prestigious university in Shanghai which greatly influenced the field of Chinese medicine. ”20 The School of Medicine required six years and the rest only four years. It was simply a French university in China. The second Catholic run university was Hautes Études in French, and was known as Jin Gu Da Xue in Chinese.

Wang Zhong-xin confirmed this in his book, Ji Du Jiao yu Zhong Guo Xian Dai Jiao Yu. He discussed how missionaries really influenced Chinese education by setting up private schools first, and later they became involved with the government to help it set up the system in the late 19 th century. ‘On October18, 1895, Timothy Richard became an important person in the government. At the suggestion of the tutor of Emperor Guangxu, Weng Tong-he, he wrote a proposal to the Emperor suggesting the changes of the educational system, one part of the proposal was to suggest to establish the Ministry of 26 THE RISE AND FALL OF FU REN UNIVERSITY, BEIJING Education, and to establish elementary schools, middle schools and universities…’10 Some other scholars in China who did rather extensive research on Christian higher education, such as Professor Zhang Kai-yuan who is the editor of a series of books on Christianity and China11 and Xu Yihua, all made references about the interactions between Christian higher education and Chinese higher education.
