Presumably what this journalist meant was that some people dismissed the Khmer refugee stories of atrocities, and others were very cautious about them. His retrospective criticism of the sceptics overlooks the fact that it was their initial scepticism that ensured the subsequent very high standard of evidence from researchers working among Khmer refugees. Indeed, it has been the sceptics who have subsequently produced the best work on the Pol Pot years. To date, however, none of the research into the gassing allegations remotely compares with the research done into the Pol Pot regime.
