Lewes seems to have been illegitimate, was abandoned by his father as an infant, and had to fend for himself from an early age. Though Lewes produced several works of fiction and drama as a young man – Collins owned a copy of his first novel, Ranthorpe (1847), and at the theatre in late 1851 enjoyed his Game of Speculation, an adaptation of a Balzac comedy – he made his name and his living as a scholarly journalist of considerable intellect with equal expertise in literature and science. Most importantly he chose as a life partner one of the most intellectually gifted women of the period, carefully fostering her career as a novelist and in the process enriching his own understanding of the complex relationship between mind and body.

He described the set he then belonged to rather romantically as not miserably nor desperately poor, but philosophically, joyously, and to some extent it would seem voluntarily so. … the principal reason for our indigence … was that most of us were about the idlest young dogs that squandered away their time on the pavements of Paris or London. 22 In contrast, Yates’s parents were so successful in their theatrical careers that they sought a more respectable profession for their son; after a classical education at Highgate School, at sixteen he was placed as a clerk in the post office, where he remained in employment until 1872.

In theory, the Brotherhood should have been sworn enemies of the Clique, so it is interesting to see the opposed forces at the mid-century joining gaily in riotous amateur productions of Goldsmith’s Good Natur’d Man and Sheridan’s The Rivals at the ‘Theatre Royal, Back Drawing Room’ 22 Wilkie Collins in 38 Blandford Square, with Wilkie Collins as grand circus master. These youthful frolics were the source of many of the author’s most lasting friendships. But both Egg and Ward died before their time, and Millais was perhaps always closer to Charley, so it was Holman Hunt, who, despite his religious fervour and frequent visits to the Holy Land in search of Biblical subjects, tended to be by the author’s side at the most solemn moments in his later life.
