Lewes seems to have been illegitimate, was abandoned by his father as an infant, and had to fend for himself from an early age. Though Lewes produced several works of fiction and drama as a young man – Collins owned a copy of his first novel, Ranthorpe (1847), and at the theatre in late 1851 enjoyed his Game of Speculation, an adaptation of a Balzac comedy – he made his name and his living as a scholarly journalist of considerable intellect with equal expertise in literature and science. Most importantly he chose as a life partner one of the most intellectually gifted women of the period, carefully fostering her career as a novelist and in the process enriching his own understanding of the complex relationship between mind and body.
