Suppose we consider a more mundane affair: how to object to a colleague's conclusions after a teaching observation? The person who makes the observation, and then writes the report, does so in his or her own name. Faculty in hundreds of departments at universities across the United States are obliged, either through administrative directives or union contracts, to write these reports.
When I learned during the next semester that I had been assigned to observe one of the same two teachers, I balked, and wrote a letter to the chair refusing to do it, especially because my observee-to-be had disdained to so much as acknowledge the previous semester's observation. This turned out to be the first the chair had known about it. When he spoke to the co-teachers, they claimed they had never seen my observation Page 19 report. The chair told me he had no interest in pursuing such a blatant lie.
If we concede (as even minor administrators probably would) that such a perception of its own purpose is probably inescapable in the life of any professional unit on occasion, the important thing is that a certain fatigued moment about the whole enterprise be presented as frivolousand therefore still committed. If instead the moment could be given directly and in its own name, what name would it have? What would minutes be that were not minutes, and who would be authorized to write them? One might as well ask what name to give education that is not education.
