This does not mean that Black women in the African Diaspora would metamorphose over night, and become wealthy, but this knowledge might subtly influence what Black women believe to be possible, and might encourage them to dream out of historical experience . . to connect with it. Speaking of economics, she never sold more than five thousand of any of the books she wrote, including Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie Mae Crawford’s intriguing story. The characteristics of the reading public have changed since 1936 when she wrote Their Eyes.

The problem has more to do with the fact that “the 42 New Moon: The Child Woman  public” begins to feel a right of ownership to the private lives of public persons. Anything less than full disclosure—or what “the public” perceives as less—is cause for alarm, if not ridicule. Convinced as I am, however, that the inner self of the literary personality, probably more than any other public, or quasi-public person, is evidenced in the products of their craft, I have sought to know the “true” Zora Neale Hurston through your writing.

Zora’s age is an example of the private woman who lopped ten years off her age. Indeed, nearly every word she ever wrote or spoke is under a spy glass. She might just as well admit it—admit the lie she used to tell about her age. She was older than they thought. On January 7, 1891, they turned her out of her nice warm sauna into this often cold, unaccommodating, but fascinating world. It was a sink or swim proposition from the very beginning, and she always enjoyed a good swim, even in rough, choppy water.
