This warm, moisture-laden air rises, cools and condenses in the atmosphere, and then falls as precipitation. Because the Earth spins on its axis, rotating air currents move air in a north to south pattern, creating cycles of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. As the warm air moves toward the poles it cools, and at around 30° latitude, begins to descend. This cool dry air mass absorbs moisture from the Earth’s surface, creating arid conditions at that latitude.
