This is especially true in a relatively developed country like South Africa. Manufactured materials are sometimes more sustainable than the unsustainable harvest of natural materials. Political/financial considerations can become the make-or-break factors of a project’s success. It is important to revisit projects to see if they stand the test of time. Early experiments in plastering proved to be unsuccessful, while techniques that were successful elsewhere were not as successful at Tlholego. These lessons can be used to create a robust new system.
If you find pallets made of softwood, you can use a nail gun and compressor to speed up the process, but this should only be done with skilled operators. Make sure that the trusses have sufficient strength for the loading conditions. A local building department or structural engineer should be consulted to find out the required design loads. If possible find an engineer with a truss-modeling program to help you with the design. At a minimum I design for 20 pounds per square foot live loads and 10 pounds per square foot dead loads when using an R-40 insulation.
In 1994 the founding residents of Tlholego began their practical training in sustainable building technologies. I invited natural builder and architect Joseph Kennedy to develop some prototype structures and help create a master plan for the site. Over the following two years, owner-builders constructed a series of experimental buildings. Some were constructed using traditional 2000-year-old Tswana designs that made use of earth and thatch. Others were constructed from large earth-filled bags and had firedbrick dome roofs.
