Early experiments in plastering proved to be unsuccessful, while techniques that were successful elsewhere were not as successful at Tlholego. These lessons can be used to create a robust new system.
If you find pallets made of softwood, you can use a nail gun and compressor to speed up the process, but this should only be done with skilled operators. Make sure that the trusses have sufficient strength for the loading conditions. A local building department or structural engineer should be consulted to find out the required design loads. If possible find an engineer with a truss-modeling program to help you with the design. At a minimum I design for 20 pounds per square foot live loads and 10 pounds per square foot dead loads when using an R-40 insulation.
In 1994 the founding residents of Tlholego began their practical training in sustainable building technologies. I invited natural builder and architect Joseph Kennedy to develop some prototype structures and help create a master plan for the site. Over the following two years, owner-builders constructed a series of experimental buildings. Some were constructed using traditional 2000-year-old Tswana designs that made use of earth and thatch. Others were constructed from large earth-filled bags and had firedbrick dome roofs.
