There were many Mondays when Phil would be at my office door asking me about money for a new piece of exercise equipment,” says Virgo. “I remember one time in particular that Phil showed up on a Monday before all the other teachers arrived and told me that he really needed $150 for this great piece of exercise equipment and a truck to pick it up. ” Lana Bassetto, a former language arts teacher at Madison Junior High in the early years when Lawler was building his PE program, said that Lawler was never discouraged by budget limitations.
