THE BORNING ROOM (Fleischman*, Paul, HarperCollins, 1991), historical novel of family life set from 1851 to 1918 in Ohio on the Stillwater River, near Lanesville. Georgina Caroline Lott recounts the major events of her family as THE BRAVE 35 they occur in or involve the ‘‘borning room,’’ a small room set aside for illness and childbirth. She is born there, and eight and a half years later, when her mother unexpectedly starts in labor, she helps Cora, a runaway slave she has hidden in the barn, deliver her brother, Zebulon.

Late in the spring, while swimming in the creek, Jess finds intact the box of coins, which she now knows are valuable. The various segments of this posthumously published story are ineptly knit, the climax fight with Hawkins is sensationalized and confusing, and the conclusion is abrupt. The main problem with which Jess struggles—how much loyalty she owes to her father— is set in relief by her deep affection for her dog, in whom she confides and with whom she discusses problems; her gradual understanding of Wrong Man’s character and motives; and her awakening sexuality and increasing attraction to Drury, a teenaged neighbor.

She is hurt when he dumps her after Bambi* Sue Bordtz tells him that she has cancer. Later she forgives him, realizing that he is just afraid, and longs to go to the school graduation party with him, getting a new dress for the occasion, and is almost ready to invite him when he invites her. When, after Helen’s death, Jessie accuses him of betraying her sister, he replies that he was scared and an idiot and weeps. His tears point up Jessie’s inability to cry over her loss.
