Slavery, however, could not be defended, as it violated the freedom of the owned and corrupted the owner. Acton advocated both poor relief and free trade for the same reason: they enabled prosperity, which in turn encouraged liberty. Christianity put forward ideas vital to the advance of freedom: protection of conscience, the church-state distinction, self-government, and alleviation of poverty. Yet in Acton’s sophisticated interpretation, the church was not always the vehicle for the delivery of these ideas to realization in history.
