The diversion of rain water to sewers along concrete and asphalt streets and sidewalks is starving the environment. Most of our new development is geared for low maintenance and machine compatibility. We will never be able to develop viable urban areas unless future design is geared towards maximum rehabilitation, low density new construction, and the redevelopment of environ~ mentally sound systems. Management techniques will have to reflect this change to curb the loss of already existing resources like our urban forests.

IV. TRAINING OF RURAL PROMOTERS WITH APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGIES FOR HEALTH The lack of adequate approach of the Official Western medical system to attend the primary diseases of the rural Third World is obvious, as demonstrated in international meetings, to tackle such problems. For this reason, we have started a search of those technologies that could be economically, culturally and socially appropriate to the Guatemalan 32 rural area. These appropriate technologies for health include the validation of Traditional Medicine; the systematization in the use of medicinal plants, the transfer of appropriate technologies (such as acupuncture, massage, chiro-practise) and, the improvement of the environmental quality by the appropriate technologies mentioned above.

Management techniques will have to reflect this change to curb the loss of already existing resources like our urban forests. We will have to move towards a more labor intensive agriculture system. Urban gardens, nurseries, family farms and alternate marketing systems all require people power. Energy cost effectiveness will be increased if human energy lessens our need for fossil fuel energy. The change from a capital intensive agriculture system must be made if we are to overcome the problems of malnutrition, high unemployment and increasing energy costs.
