While this is a broad categorization, it refers essentially to the times before guns, explosives, and hijackings. During such times, terrorism revolved around assassinations and murders. The Zealots of the Holy Land, the Hashashin of the Middle East, and ancient Rome and Greece practiced assassinations at different times.

This enhanced sense of patriotism, however, does not last long. In time, fear dissipates and routine sets back in. When the state from which the attack may have originated is threatened with attack itself, it also experiences a similar but temporary phenomenon. The rise of patriotism, in turn, often contributes to the success of rightwing or conservative parties in later elections. In Israel, for example, the Likud coalition emerged on top almost every time in the aftermath of sustained Palestinian attacks.

It was at this juncture that the Arabization of the Palestine conflict occurred.
