I Modelling A system is a term so widely used in engineering that its use can cause a certain amount of confusion. An engineering system is a collection of interconnected parts or components. The space contained within the cylinder and piston assembly is the region in which the thermodynamic changes take place. In order to analyse the thermodynamic behaviour it is necessary to define this region by means of a thermodynamic system, a thermodynamic system being a collection of matter in the form of a working fluid.

To do this the student must have a good understanding of the physical behaviour of the fluid used in a thermodynamic device or situation. Typical devices that will be considered in this and later chapters are turbines, compressors, boilers, and pistons in cylinders. In order to analyse such devices it is also necessary to be able to model the situation. A model is a means of representing the real device or situation. The most familiar type of model is probably the' scale' model. For example, a car manufacturer would test a scale model of a proposed design in a wind tunnel to check on the drag characteristics, before going to the expense of building a fullsized prototype.
