In these early articles, Vygotsky did not provide any clear definition of the aspects of consciousness, thinking, or mind that differentiate humans from animals nor did he specify the mechanisms through which speech and social interaction contribute to their development. These articles are nonetheless fundamental to any attempt to understand the subsequent development of the Vygotskian paradigm because they indicate an important motivation for Vygotsky’s concern with the connection between verbally mediated social interaction and the development of psychological functions.
It itself is socially-culturally-politically determined. DANIELS made the interesting claim that values are an integral component of the ZPD: She writes ‘The ZPD is a very valuable tool. It implies that we have to have some values and an idea of what a good life is if we are to educate children…. if you read Vygotsky carefully, you see that the ZPD is not just a general psychological law. ’ (Newman and Holzman 1993:82–83) In that they are working towards a socially expanded model of the ZPD they are perhaps reminding us that Vygotsky was creating a psychology for social purposes.
