Your web browser opens at a strange home page that you didn’t request. The browser won’t let you change the home page. When you run a search, the browser takes you to a site you did not request. Your browser takes you to web pages other than the ones you requested. Nothing happens when you click a link to a website. Web links from programs (such as a word processor) don’t work. You see extra toolbars on your browser or other programs. Links that you never requested appear in your desktop or your Favorites list.
Many pop-up windows are nothing more than visual clutter on your screen. If you never use instant messaging, use the Add/Remove Programs tool in the Control Panel to delete the messaging programs that Windows, America Online, Internet service providers, and “helpful” software packages have installed on your computer. Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP includes a Pop-up Blocker tool for Internet Explorer. To turn the tool on or off, or to change its settings, open the Tools menu and choose the Pop-up Blocker option.
