Underwood, the distinguished head of the second generation of the Underwood family to serve as missionaries in Korea, introduced a bibliographical essay on Western publications on Korea by noting that the number of such works meant that it was unlikely that one person could own them all.
Such hopes were dashed by Chinese intervention. New evidence from Chinese and former Soviet sources indicates that this was always likely from the outbreak of the war. In any case, from the time that UN forces first crossed the 38th parallel, the Chinese had been sending signals to the United States that if non-Korean forces approached China's border, China would become involved. Such warnings were discounted, and the massive Chinese troop deployments which became clear in late October 1950 caught the UN forces by surprise.
Within three days, the North Korean armies swept aside the poorly armed South Korean forces and were in Seoul. They scarcely paused, but carried on down the peninsula. The South Korean government fled before them, first to Taechôn, then to Taegu, and finally to the port of Pusan. From Pusan, there was nowhere to go but the sea. Meanwhile, the United States, which in 1949 had declared that Korea lay outside the area of its defence interests, now decided that the North Korean attack represented a communist challenge to the free world, requiring decisive action.
