Use a more dense print; toner may be too light. 38 IMAGERY ON FABRIC N K JET P R N T E R S Since most inkjet printers use water-soluble rather than alcohol-based inks, they are nonpermanent (ever sneeze on an inkjet print~). If you have already run silk or cotton through your inkjet printer you probably saw those gorgeous colors flow down the drain as the fabric was rinsed. Textile artists have tried to arrest the escaping, fugitive colors in various ways, but have had limited success. So, until jet printers have permanent inks, here are some alternatives.

Inkjet transfers are special polymer-treated papers which, when run through an inkjet printer, can be heat transferred to cloth. Manufactured as T-shirt transfers, the instructions list the specific printers for which they are designed. While the TR-lOl was made specifically for Canon printers, it works in other inkjet printers as well. I have had excellent results with a Hewlett-Packard printer and a Stylewriter 2400. It is important to know that this paper is designed for use with water-based inks.

Here is a nifty method of applying the heat-set foil using the laser printer. Print your image or letters onto stabilized fabric. Then re-run the fabric through the printer covered by a sheet of foil but without printing it. Heat will set foil to toner, and the excess foil will peel off. Ritva Theoretically. My laser printer is new, and perhaps the "improved" toners do not bond to the This example shows Ritva's foil. It is essential to use foil that is transferred by heat setting, not burnishing.
