But as narratology turned from the systematic study of narrated content to examine the ways in which stories are narrated (‘discourse’ rather than ‘story’), 11 Woolf’s innovative narrative technique became a subject of renewed investigation. At the same time, just as earlier formalist criticism had a strongly thematic component, so most later studies of Woolf approach narratological analysis as inseparable from cultural and ideological critique. Narratology’s initial search for universals necessitated the exclusion of context from the analytic field; however, for many critics, the meaning of narrative depends on its function in a communicative system.

Naremore discusses Lawrence Bowling (1950) as an example of the first approach and Robert Humphrey (1954) as an example of the latter. Today, stream of consciousness is generally distinguished from interior monologue on the grounds that the former presents unconscious impressions as well as conscious thoughts and employs a linguistic style that does not adhere to formal grammatical structures. See Prince (1989, 92). 7. James Hafley (1954) had earlier advanced a similar view, arguing that the characters’ views are filtered through the narrator’s consciousness.

Cohn’s argument here is that fictional minds are transparent, unlike real minds which are not, and that such transparency depends on a narrative perspective that intersects with, and yet is not identical to, that of the character. Delineating three ways of narrating consciousness – quoted narratological approaches 29 monologue, narrated monologue, and psycho-narration – Cohn made the striking argument that the proportion of unconscious processes in each mode is directly correlated to the proportion of narrator intervention.
