It is this privilege that needs to be deconstructed and challenged so that it no longer serves as a barrier to understanding the complexities of violence against women. ”48 What does this mean for feminist organizing against violence? For one, it means that feminists must refuse to reduce women to mono-particularistic identities based on one axis of identification.

6 In this chapter, I argue that the media marginalizes most lesbians and women working in prostitution through neglect and indifference with regard to the violence they experience, especially when they are poor, working-class, and/or women of color. A privileged race and/or class identity seems to increase the value the media accords a woman’s life. This constructs a context of social apathy in response to endemic violence against some women, as opposed to compassion and concern for socially privileged women.

In the early 1990s when I initially researched this topic, the New York Times Index did not even have a category specific to lesbians; it said, “See Homosexuality,” and under “homosexuality and homicide,” almost all of the articles are about violence against gay men. Part of the reason for this is that when women are harassed, assaulted, or murdered, news stories may not discuss the fact that the victims are lesbians, or the lesbianism is muted, despite its potential relevance to the incidents.
