There are many types of noise; for example, it can be continuous, intermittent or impact; white or thermal (all frequencies and all intensities at random); pink (similar to thermal but within a specific passband) (see Figure 2-98); sawtooth (regular but rough); and so on. The main characteristic shared by noises is that they are essentially nonperiodic (even though they can occur over time). Further, forensic noise is any sound-periodic or aperiodic-that interferes with the signal of interest. For example, music and speech can qualify as "forensic" noise if they mask the speech you are trying to hear and decode.

Thus, it can be seen that this type of graph, or spectrogram, provides a two-dimensional version of any sine wave; time is ignored and only the frequency and intensity features of that wave are included. Before proceeding, it should be indicated that, when several sine waves are produced at once, they combine into a single tone (especially if all are the integral multiples of the lowest) and they do so according to sign (or direction of displacement). Hence, in Figure 2-6 you can see, first, two waves of equal amplitude.
