They missed the old state, and they were not really quite sure what the new state demanded of them. Indeed, at that point, most people in Austria, considering themselves German, only wanted Anschluss with Germany, a step the victorious Allies would not allow.

The school was opened in 1864 as a Realgymnasium, part of a citywide effort to address the lack of schools for the growing population. At the time, Vienna had a total population of 552,052 residents and yet contained only four overcrowded Gymnasien dating from a time when Vienna was only a third as large. In this respect, Vienna was far behind the rest of the AustroHungarian Empire and Germany, and ought to have been operating 11 or 12 Gymnasien to service its population (Pokorny 1865, pp. 2–6).
