The land of the New Englanders was hard and stony and poorly suited to farming. The fertile soil and amenable climate of the South, however, naturally encouraged agriculture as the primary economic pursuit of the entire region.

Perhaps it is used by southerners with a degree of self-conscious irony and sarcasm as a way of turning back the criticism. Students on university campuses have long called classes in southern literature “grit lit,” by which they mean literature written by people who generally eat grits.
