From the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and down to the 18th century, most major and minor writers praised the pastoral and rural life over city life and cursed the materialism and decadence fostered by the new spirits of commercialism and progress. When the European settlers arrived in 26 AGRARIANISM IN LITERATURE North America, they brought with them these ideas as a part of their cultural heritage. The land of the New Englanders was hard and stony and poorly suited to farming. The fertile soil and amenable climate of the South, however, naturally encouraged agriculture as the primary economic pursuit of the entire region.

Perhaps it is used by southerners with a degree of self-conscious irony and sarcasm as a way of turning back the criticism. Students on university campuses have long called classes in southern literature “grit lit,” by which they mean literature written by people who generally eat grits.
