The possibility of the weakness of the will is a logical problem, while that of Poe-perversity is not. The person did not want to go home at noon, because he was going to break his promise. He is accustomed to break his promises because of some stimulus-quality in such decisions. But the decision-like event is not guided by another, higher case-specific value. The person just breaks the norm and enjoys it. It is Sade’s task to tell a convincing story of this anomic possibility. However, I do not believe that one can develop a non-empirical and analytical theory of perversion.

A perverse person’s conduct creates harm necessarily, as the result of his action and not only as its consequence. What is the difference here between “results” and “consequences”? Closing a window results in a closed window, and has the consequence of reducing the draught in the room. In the same way, a wicked action always results in harm and may also have harm as its consequence. Or it may even show a net benefit. Since, however, the consequences do not really matter, we are dealing here with a non-consequentialist normative framework.

Nevertheless, this hypothesis is refuted by the fact that such a law applies only to some people and not to others; or to put this point more accurately, its application varies enormously with regard to people with different moral, intellectual, and social statuses. A person may play around with the principle and utilize it for his own personal advantage. A wicked person may destroy others and flourish as well. Such a person may also claim that the principle of nature operates through his decisions, and may benefit from this idea.
