His contribution to fashion comes through his association with the Ballets Russes, for which he designed vivid, brilliantly colored sets and costumes which directly influenced clothing of the period. balaclava Helmet-like head covering, either knitted or crocheted, named after a village in the Crimea that was the scene of the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854. For soldiers in the two world wars, British and US women knitted balaclavas in khaki, a color used for camouflage.

He also made coats, suits, and stately evening gowns. Berhanyer's handling of fabric and seaming imparted a formal, somewhat austere, line to some of his creations. He is also noted for his menswear. was founded 1907 as Grover St Company, a corsetry by a Mrs. Grover and a Miss Mobberly. In 1910 Fred R. Burley acquired shares in the company and two years later bought the entire stock. The trademark "Berlei" Elio Berhanyer's confident black was wool crepe pants Berlei Berlei in business in Sydney, Australia, and brassieres for The company making corsets the wholesale trade and from 1926 based its registered in 1917.

Illustrator, costume designer. Born Nantes, France. Barbier studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1908 to 1910. He spent many years designing theatrical costumes and sets and worked as an illustrator for la gazette du BON TON, LE JOURNAL DES DAMES ET DES MODES, FEUILLETS D'ART, femina, and vogue. He was interested in both 18th-century art and art nouveau and the strong influence of the latter can be seen in the curlicues and flowing shapes of his supple, fashionable women. Barbier also illustrated albums of ballet dancers and made wood engravings.
