Sermons of the time frequently lambaste priests for not living up to the requirements of their calling, but complaints from the pulpit are not good evidence; preachers follow the adage that “damn braces but bless relaxes”. Research, indeed, finds no evidence of generic corruption in the English church. That is not to say there were not abuses. Given the wealth of the church, some wrongdoing was inevitable. 1 The clergy were the largest profession. They made up perhaps 2 per cent of the population but possibly three times that in a city like Norwich.

The church and the clergy were by far the largest group in the “writing classes”, with the result that much of what we know reflects their perspective and values. In the second place, we have to remember that among both clergy and laity, written material was principally produced by or for those with status, wealth, property, and education. Thus to tell what a bishop or a duke believed may be possible, but not the cottager and still less his wife. Moreover, information very generally survives in the form of anecdotes.

A more positive assessment sees Rome attacking the problems that had given rise to Protestantism, and so prefers the term “Catholic Reformation”. This book, however, contends that the terms “Reformation” and “Counter” or “Catholic Reformation” are seriously misleading. They presume an iron curtain between Protestant and Roman Catholic, but that is only how the Reformation story ended. It did not begin like that. Division had not been inherent from the start, and to think otherwise is a distortion.
