Often a specific aspect of their current story has brought them for help; it is the first story the helper hears, and the one to which he/she must respond.

We might wonder, are the stories the family tells about itself just a way to record its history, or do they serve other purposes? These stories, according to Langellier and Peterson (1994), are often a form of social control. The story of how Mom met Dad, the courtship, the struggles; how an uncle was a hero in the war; how grandma crossed the mountains in a covered wagon, suggest ways of being, and often are aimed at giving direction.
