One student, for example, was asked to outline his planning for the day which included a science activity designed to introduce the topic of minibeasts. After the student had discussed his ideas, he was then asked to explain what he felt was the best way to promote learning in science.

At this stage, he associates learning difficulties with poorer social backgrounds, and deficits on the part of the child. One thing I’ve got to do is special needs learning. I was with this girl who was backward, trying to teach her to read and maths… I know you shouldn’t bracket kids together, but they are a certain bunch, but I haven’t had any experience with children with special needs. Images of Teaching Adam’s early images of teaching can be seen to shape much of his thinking over the next two years and he describes these in terms of two aspects—the personal and the professional.

He also refers to two particular teachers from his years in the UNDERSTANDING TEACHER EDUCATION 37 sixth form, whom he also holds in high esteem. Their relationships with pupils, and the examples of behaviour which they set within the school, are viewed as very important aspects of teaching and learning. Insights gained from his mother’s commitment to the profession seem to have enabled Adam to empathize with the thinking of these, and other, teachers: …seeing the way they acted and interacted with the class… They were obviously very intelligent people but they were very interesting as well and they could draw things out of pupils rather than stuffing things in.
